What Do BCAB Paddlesport Instructors Do?

Paddlesport Instructors introduce and train learners on the skills of their disciplines. To become an Instructor, you must be a confident, independent paddler passionate about sharing your talents. The process of becoming an Instructor depends on your current skill level and what your professional goals are.

Who Governs Paddlesports Qualifications in the UK?

Formerly known as British Canoeing, Paddle UK is the umbrella organisation responsible for setting the frameworks for all National Associations, including areas such as coaching, competition and representing the watersports interests of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Paddle UK’s training arm is called Paddles Up Training and is your gateway to professional Paddlesports progression. They use recognised British Canoeing Awarding Body frameworks for their qualifications, many of which come with CPD points you can add to your National Association Register. Many Awards are also recognised on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

Membership with Paddle UK

To register for Paddle UK training and assessments, you must hold Full National Association Membership. As an organisation, they support recreational and professional paddlers with waterways access, training, funding, insurance and advocacy. They provide plenty of resources, tools and support to aspiring Paddlesports professionals.

What’s the Difference Between a BCAB Paddlesport Leader, Instructor and Coach?

Different responsibilities come with different titles, so it’s important to understand the differences before embarking on your new career path. Instructors and Coaches generally specialise in a Paddlesport discipline and provide progressive guidance.

BCAB Paddlesport Leader

A Paddlesport Leader leads trips on sheltered water, with Kayaks, Canoes and SUPs, like supervising a group on an outing. Sheltered water is classed as calm or slow-moving rivers, estuaries, canals or small lakes.

BCAB Paddlesport Instructor

A Paddlesport Instructor teaches participants introductory skills and supports their initial skill development, like in a Taster session at an activity centre. They often specialise in a chosen discipline but are qualified to instruct and lead mixed craft groups.

BCAB Paddlesport Coach

A Paddlesport Coach helps clients improve their Paddlesport skills in specific disciplines and environments, and can progress to higher-level qualifications such as White Water Kayaking Coach (Advanced) or Stand-Up Paddleboard Open Water Coach. The Paddlesport Coach qualification is usually a progression from the Paddlesport Instructor qualification.

Important Soft Skills for BCAB Kayak, Canoe and Stand-Up Paddleboard Instructors

A good Paddlesports Instructor is confident in their safety and technical competence and possesses soft skills that facilitate connection with learners. It’s important to be aware of the group’s ability, have a sense of appropriate trip planning, and provide a person-centred approach to teaching.

Useful Soft Skills for Paddlesport Instructors include:

  • Communication

  • Organisation

  • Observation

  • Problem-solving

  • Adaptability

  • Empathy

  • Patience

BCAB Paddlesport Instructor Assessment

The Paddlesport Instructor Assessment is part of the training process, and Instructor Tutors will aim to make it relaxed and enjoyable. Participants choose to be assessed on either a Canoe, Kayak or Paddleboard during their training, but the qualification applies to all 3 disciplines.

As this qualification applies to multiple watercrafts, it will be up to your employer to determine what standards should be met for teaching in additional crafts. This may mean doing an in-house competency check or taking a discipline-specific Personal Performance Award. You do not need to retake the full Paddlesport Instructor Training for each watercraft.

How Does the BCAB Paddlesport Instructor Assessment Work?

For most participants, assessment takes place continually throughout the 2-day training course. You will be required to demonstrate competence in the following 3 areas:

  1. Professional Standards

  2. Personal Paddling Skills

  3. Rescue Skills

Assessment occurs through peer assessment, self-assessment, Instructor Tutor observation and discussion. When you have successfully demonstrated that you meet the national standard, your Tutor will recommend you for certification.

If you don’t pass the course the first time, you can repeat the training course or work with your Tutor and redo the criteria in question within 2 months of participating in your course.

Useful Courses for BCAB Paddlesport Instructor Progression

Specialisation increases employability, so look for courses and workshops that elevate your technical and safety competence. Personal Performance Awards like the White Water Award or Sea Kayak Award are rewarding pathways to pursue and diversify your skill set. Alongside hard skills, think about other ways to improve your delivery and connection with learners. Continuing professional development courses like Customer Experience and Paddle-Ability are great ways to gain a deeper understanding of how to facilitate the learning process.

Maximise Your Time and Professional Pathways
