Why do we run an intensive outdoor instructor training course?

Trainee rock climbing instructors learning to climb

Mendip Activity Centre has run an instructor training course- in one form or another- since our inception 30-plus years ago! Since then, we are proud that hundreds of instructors have learnt their craft as outdoor instructors with Mendip before going out into the wider industry.

Many of our current team started as training instructors with little or no experience before gaining a job as a full instructors. So, why do we deliver an intensive instructor training course? And why should you consider it?

Growing the Outdoor Activity Industry

We want to help grow the outdoor activity industry. Being an instructor is the best job in the world but it can be hard work getting there!

improving navigation skills to become a mountain leader

There are so many qualifications to gain from the Rock Climbing Instructor to Paddlesport Leader, Ski Instructor to Archery Leader and even the Duke of Edinburgh Award Supervisor and Assessor award. The number of activities you could choose to lead and instruct are endless and it is often difficult to know where to begin.

By providing an all-inclusive course, we have made the process of becoming a fully qualified outdoor activity instructor. On an intensive course, everything will be planned for you: no need to worry about planning and booking twenty courses yourself. Instead, you can focus on the important (and fun) stuff like improving your knot work, building confidence on a paddleboard, and becoming a great instructor.

It’s also a really great value option with all accommodation, catering and transport included.

Full-Time Employment Opportunities

We want people to have the opportunity to build careers in the outdoor industry. This might be jobs with centres such as Mendip Activity Centre (we employ instructors off the back of this course every year), elsewhere in the UK or abroad. Previous course participants have been to work all around the world. Or, you could choose to work as a freelance outdoor instructor.

The opportunities to join the outdoor activity industry are constantly growing with outdoor education and adventure in hot demand! Job sites such as the IOL, Blue Dome or the Outdoor Activity Directory are good places to look. Already a qualified instructor? Have a look to see if Mendip have any job vacancies.

praticing rescue and leadership skills in watersports

As well as becoming excellent at specific skills such as navigation, skiing and paddling, becoming an instructor will also give you invaluable transferable skills. You will become great at leadership, risk management, group management, learning and development, planning, reviewing and relationship building. Working as an outdoor instructor is the best job in the world (fact) and it can also lead to wide-ranging roles in management, operations, coaching, and teaching.
