Where should I train to be an outdoor instructor?
We think our course is great, but we recommend doing some research and checking out what else is out there. The outdoor industry is a friendly and supportive community and we want you to find the course that’s best for you. We have put together some prompts to help you find the course best suited for what you are looking for, including other companies to research, depending on what you are after.
"I WANT ALL YEAR-ROUND WORK"
It’s no secret that the outdoor adventure industry is busier in the summer period. At Mendip, as well as training you in summer activities, we ensure you have a wide range of qualifications that allow you to work all-year round. Our snowsports slope is busiest in winter, so becoming a UKSS Level 1 Ski Instructor is a great qualification which will allow you to instruct on artificial dry slopes or indoor snow domes. We are also lucky to have some of the UK’s best caves under our feet. Caves stay at a constant temperature all year round…and so can be explored all year. Other options include gaining qualifications that will set you for summer seasons in the UK and abroad.
"I WANT TO SPEND MY LIFE ON THE BEACH"
Mendip is not far from the coast and we will give you the opportunity to go coastal! But if you want to spend your life in the sea and jumping off huge rocks, we recommend checking out Land and Wave’s Instructor Development Scheme.
Winner: Land and Wave
"I WANT TO BECOME A PADDLER"
Getting your Paddlesport Instructor is a right of passage for any aspiring instructor. We’ll make sure you are comfortable personally and with running sessions on flat water in kayaks, canoes and SUPS. And then, the South-West is the place to be! With the International White Water Centre, the rivers of Exmoor, Dartmoor and South Wales all at our fingertips, we are well suited to get out and play on rivers!
"I WANT TO LIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS"
The Mendips are not quite mountains! During the course, you’ll spend plenty of time in the mountains (the Brecon Beacons and further afield). If you are not worried abotu being in the mountains, then Mendip is the best place to start. However, if you want to live in the mountains right from the word go, we recommend checking out Plas Y Brenin’s Instructor Development Scheme.
Winner: Plas Y Brenin
"I WANT TO BE AN OUTDOOR CLIMBING INSTRUCTOR"
The UK is steeped in climbing history, and the Mendip Hills are no exception. Cheddar Gorge is a stone’s throw away from our base- not only is this the home of Britain’s oldest complete human skeleton, but there are almost 1000 rock climbing routes. Avon Gorge is found uniquely in the heart of Bristol. The Forest of Dean offers plenty of exciting crags, and then there’s the wonderful Dartmoor Granite. Did we mention that we have our very own private rocksports quarry on-site?
"I WANT TO STUDY OUTDOOR LEARNING THEORY"
There are plenty of university courses on offer in outdoor education. You are likely to gain loads of academic experience and do some entry-level qualifications, however it is worth looking into what qualifications you will gain- there might not be enough to get a job. As a student, you will get long summers to work/play/adventure (or all three?!).
"I WANT TO EXPLORE SOMEWHERE NEW"
Well, we can’t answer this one for you! If you don’t know North Somerset and the South West it’s full of everything… rivers, crags, caves, seas, valleys, hills, cities, dry ski slopes, rock climbing centres…. Or, check out anywhere you can find!
Winner: Any and all!
